New Options for 40 Million Disabled Americans
03-21-09 19:09

A free online community helps people who have disabilities find live-in assistance or travel accommodations available in exchange for room & board or other services.

Pennington, New Jersey - March 20, 2009 - More than 40 million Americans are currently disabled. For these individuals, mobility has become a luxury they can often not take for granted. Consequently, they may have trouble enjoying the same quality of life as non-disabled people. For example, going on vacation can be difficult because of the limited number of accessible rooms and other services needed. Even in their homes, they may face challenges, including cleaning, cooking, even showering. Without the money to hire a private assistant, many disabled Americans are forced to move into expensive nursing homes where they lose not only their freedom but sometimes their dignity.

A free online community is providing another option for these 40 million Americans - an option that could help restore not just their freedom but also their ability to explore the world in ways they never thought possible. That community is called Host & Care.

Host & Care is designed to help one another. For example, a disabled American who needs help caring for their home on a full-time basis can connect with someone on the web site who needs a room, perhaps a college student or an unemployed individual needing to get back on his feet. By exchanging a free room for home care services, both people can help one another in an affordable way.

While some critics of the site may argue that these connections could be made through other venues, the Host & Care service provides features not found elsewhere. The Web 2.0 elements, such as video streaming and chat rooms, give both parties a chance to get to know one another before entering into this type of agreement. The community also offers reduced rates on background and reference checks to ensure the security of both people.

These exchange arrangements are not long-term so for someone needing temporary assistance cooking meals while they are rehabilitating after an accident or looking for a place to stay while they are vacationing in another state or country can find the solution they need through the Host & Care community. Even people who were convinced their disabilities would mean an end to their vacations can find an accessible home where they can stay during their visit and where they can receive the care they require.
