COLLEGE DESTINATIONS
Most college destinations sound like an advertisement for 24-hour long drinking parties that will land you in jails where you'll stay until you can figure out how to give them enough money for bail and such!
So, what do you want to do with your summer months?
Travel Is Expensive
In these days of unemployment and the fact that our great country is in the midst of a recession, looking for a day job may not be the best idea either. However if you do have some funds set aside to be able to travel, you will be able to widen your horizons as you have never thought before. Sure you have a little bit of savings but it's just not enough to allow you to travel to these wonderful destinations and be able to pay for room and board as well!
Exchanges
Do you think that you have a certain talent that you could use to barter your way to receiving room and board in exchange for the use of that talent? Maybe you're saying to yourself, "No way, Man!" before you think this through.
There are family owned restaurants that need the entire family, less the small children, to run that restaurant. Do you think that you could baby sit for the kids while they spend their time making money at the restaurant? How about tutoring? Do you think that you could explain to their kids what America looks like, what our mores are, what we do for a living, what American values are and what we do for entertainment? Could you go to the the children's school to tell them all about that? Could you personally entertain an aged parent with tales of what it's like living in America if they've never traveled out of their own village?
If you are lucky enough to be fluent or even close to being fluent in another language, that is a talent that has tremendous value to those from another country. The point is that the destination can be anywhere in the world, and you have a marketable talent that you can exchange for room and board.
How to accomplish
OK, so you are asking yourself, "How do I do this?" Actually http://hostandcare.com can handle those details for you. For example there are organic farms that need farm work done in exchange for room and board.
Consider carefully what your major is and tie it in as a life experience that the college may actually give you credit for! For example if your major is animal husbandry, then going to a ranch in another country and working as a ranch hand as an exchange would be perfect for you.
If you are majoring in history, working in Greece and touring the countryside as you care for a family's children is an excellent opportunity. Can you imagine using your skills in English to bring other people considering moving to the US the language skills they will need? Books and tapes and the Internet are all fine teaching tools, but nothing beats someone from that particular country to teach someone the particular language of a country.
