Host Family in the USA: A Home Away From Home
03-09-09
Homestay for Students
When your child wishes to study in another place, the instant reaction you would feel is to worry. You think about who is going to take care of your child, who is going to look after his needs, and whether he is in the company of reliable people. With these apprehensions of parents, the one great alternative that is most recommended is to get them to a homestay program. Homestay is a form of study abroad program where students get to stay with another family in exchange for simple favors like babysitting, yard work, pet sitting, and other light household chores. There are several families who are too willing to host a foreign exchange student, and this can be a welcome thought for parents who might need a home for their children.
Homestay for Singles and Travelers
There are times when single people think of migrating to another place when they feel that they need to gain more experience in their lives. Or some would want to find a more suitable job than what they currently have to be able to move a little further. Even travelers hop from one place to another in order to learn more and to study other cultures. Going to a place where you need a room or an apartment to stay can be costly, especially since you are starting from scratch. Being single and alone can be an advantage because it is not hard to find a decent place to stay. But if you really want to save more, the most logical move to make is to stay with host families. There are several host homes that can be found in different countries and states of the United States.
More Than Having a Room
For some students, singles, and travelers, having a host family to take them in can be just for a free room rental. But for most of them, the experience can go beyond, such as having the chance to experience the culture of the family they are staying in. More often than not student homestay, singles, and travelers are treated as part of the host family and involve them to almost all family activities like camping, dining out, and short vacations where they are not expected to share the expense. Having to stay with a family is much better than just renting a room in an estranged place with no supervision at all.
Host Families’ Insights
Being a host to total strangers can be a little risky, considering that you are allowing people to stay and live with you not knowing their true background. Host families have different reasons why they allow the homestay of students, singles, and travelers, such as:
1. purely to assist homestays understanding their need to have a place to stay at the most minimal cost as possible,
2. to exchange and understand the different cultures and in this way, to better understand and appreciate the world we are in, and
3. to get additional help in order to augment income and defray expenses.
